Wheldon was born in Emberton on 22 nd June 1978 and begun karting aged four. Wheldon ended the season tied on points with Sam Hornish, Jr; but as Hornish had won more races, he took the title. Wheldon had a moderately successful season in 2007, finishing fourth in the Championship.

He then joined Sam Schmidt Motorsports to race in the last two races of the season, Kentucky and Las Vegas. Dan finished fourteenth in Kentucky.
