From NATO's archives lend me some photos of the Sentinel E-3A Sentry, a military variant of the Boeing 707 airborne command and control and air surveillance. The aircraft and the system is known as AWACS - Airborne Early Warning & Control System.
NATO fleet is 17 aircraft which all belong to E-3A Component and are based at the German Geilenkirchen a stone's throw from the border with the Netherlands. NATO Airborne Early Warning lockheed martin internship and Control Force is one of the few military units that actually belongs to and is operated by NATO and not any of the individual member states.
The aircraft are manned by mixed staff from all NATO countries and entered service in 1982. During the Cold War, patrolled regularly along the inner German border. Rarely, if ever, are all aircraft home in Geilenkirchen; a number always starts lockheed martin internship from the front base rings including Norway, Turkey and Italy. Collaboration also occurs with the purely American and British AWACS divisions.
Geilenkirchen is also one of the European bases for the American air refueling fleet, which is what I saw on my visit to Geilenkirchen in April 2010 is seen here two Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker that normally belongs lockheed martin internship at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
A visit to the town of Geilenkirchen, located a few miles from the air base, which is to be thrown 25 years back in time. In the hotel I was staying at the receptionist spoke flawless English, NATO's local newsletter Skywatch lockheed martin internship was read and on the wall hung various plaques lockheed martin internship and diplomas from both NATO and USAFE.
In Brunssum on the Dutch side of the border is one of NATO headquarters, in this case, Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum. Here is also a primary school, AFNORTH International School, for children to NATO personnel from different countries. The Allied presence in these areas is clear and it does not feel as if both the walls and rådsunioner fallen decades ago.
In Brunssum is also a major Canadian presence, including in the form of the military radio station Canadian Forces Network lockheed martin internship here broadcast over the FM band like American AFN Europe. CFN Europe sends incidentally lockheed martin internship online and can be recommended, if only because of the abundance of Canadian news, Bryan Adams-rock and local weather lockheed martin internship forecasts regarding the remaining lockheed martin internship Allied bases in Germany and Benelux.
The first active effort was made in conjunction with the Iraqi invasion lockheed martin internship of Kuwait lockheed martin internship in August 1990, when parts of the AWACS fleet ombaserade lockheed martin internship to Incirlik airbase in eastern Turkey to monitor lockheed martin internship the airspace and the sea in the eastern Mediterranean until the end of the war in March 1991.
Since then, NATO AEW & CF participated in numerous lockheed martin internship conflicts, most recently in Afghanistan and Libya. How the future of these aging E-3A and 707 TCA looks like is another question, but since I only deal with the history of this blog, so I'll leave it spörsmålet for others to answer.
